چکیده

We develop an analytical approach to theoretically investigate light speed propagation near the band edge of a coupled cavity waveguide in the presence of residual disorder. This approach that is based on a mean field theory allows us to define the domains of validity of the group velocity and the energy transport velocity concepts as well as a guideline to minimize the role of the residual disorder. Inspired by an analogy with the theory of multiple scattering of classical wave, we derive an analytical formula for the energy transport velocity in periodic photonic structures. Whereas the group velocity diverges near the band edge in the presence of any amount of residual disorder, we show that the energy transport velocity mainly follows the ideal group velocity of the unperturbed structure except for very strong disturbances out of the scope of the presented model. © 2010 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 130.2790, 130.5296, 230.4555, 260.2030, 290.4210, 310.6628.

Heavy photons at coupled-cavity waveguide band edges in a three-dimensional photonic crystal

We report on measurements of delay time corresponding to evanescent coupled-cavity modes in threedimensional photonic crystals. By creating a defect inside the crystal, photons are confined within a boxlike cavity of volume ;(l/2). It is observed that photon lifetime increases drastically and group velocity of photons tends towards zero at the waveguiding band edges of the periodic coupled cavi...

Localization in silicon nanophotonic slow-light waveguides

Slowing down light on a chip can lead to the development of optical buffers1, filters2,3 and memory elements4 useful for optical interconnects and for resonantly enhanced chip-based nonlinear optics. Several approaches to slow light rely on the phenomenon of light interference in a sequence of coupled resonators; however, light interference is also responsible, in disordered structures, for the...

Mathematical Modeling of Strong Ground Velocity Pulses using Spectral Decomposition and Forward Directivity Effects

Introduction The nature of near-field earthquake records is very complicated and uncertain. Due to this complexity, the prediction of the real structural responses has become very difficult. Based on the analysis of the physical characteristics of near-field records, it is possible to use the simplified mathematical models. Near-field ground motions which are often associated with a progressiv...

Mean Velocity and Static Pressure in a Sharp-edge Circular Nozzle Jet

An axisymmetric jet issued from a sharp edged circular convergent nozzle has been studied experimentally in the near field at Reynolds number 5.3x104  to search the saddle shape behavior of mean velocity and the role of mean static pressure in the jet flow. Due to the vena contracta effect the centerline mean velocity of the jet increases about 4.2% of its exit value and corresponding decrease ...
